Building Safety Tips:
If you experience a slow drain or backup in your sink or garbage disposal, it may indicate a blockage that requires maintenance.
Drain & Garbage Disposal Reminder
We’ve seen a few preventable clogs lately that affect everyone’s plumbing system. Following a few simple habits can save you (and the building) from costly repairs, water damage, and emergency service calls.
Here’s your easy-to-follow guide to protecting our drains and garbage disposals:
What’s Safe to Send Down the Drain
Only water, soap, human waste and toilet paper belong in any drain.
For garbage disposals: small, soft food particles only.
What Should NEVER Go Down Any Drain or Disposal
Food waste (scraped into the trash or compost first)
Grease, oils, or fats (they solidify in pipes)
“Flushable” wipes, baby wipes, or any wipes
Paper towels, napkins, or tissues
Hair, dental floss, cotton swabs, or feminine products
Coffee grounds, eggshells, bones, potato peels, or fibrous vegetables (celery, onion skins, etc.)
Chemicals, paint, or medications
How to Use Your Garbage Disposal the Right Way (Step-by-Step)
Run cold water before, during, and after using the disposal.
Turn on the disposal and slowly feed in small amounts of food at a time.
Let it run for 10–15 seconds after the food is gone.
Keep the water running for another 10–15 seconds to flush everything through the pipes.
Never turn off the water while the disposal is still running.
Pro Tips to Prevent Problems
Once a week, pour a cup of baking soda + 1 cup of white vinegar down each drain, let it fizz for 15 minutes, then flush with hot water. (This is a safe, natural way to keep lines clear.)
Install a sink strainer or catch basket to trap food particles.
Run your dishwasher regularly—standing water can cause odors and buildup.
Important Warning
Do NOT use Drano, Liquid Plumer, or any chemical drain cleaners. These products can damage pipes, create toxic fumes, and actually make clogs worse over time. If you have a slow drain, please contact a plumber.
By following these simple guidelines, you’re helping prevent leaks, backups, and water intrusion issues that can affect neighboring units and Common Areas.
Thank you for being such great stewards of our building! Your cooperation keeps Luma clean, safe, and running smoothly for everyone.
